CBN Open: Adegoke, Marylove On Fire As Babalola Bows Out

Sarah Adegoke and Marylove Edwards were spectacular in their matches to qualify for the next phase of the ongoing Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Tennis Championship.

Both players got Wild Cards to play at the 43rd edition of the tournament and didn’t disappoint the organizers by advancing to the next phase of the competition.

Adegoke, returning from a two-year absence from the national scene was very sharp on the court and wasted no time in registering her presence back on the court.

In a quick game of 6-1, 6-0, the former Nigerian number one dispatched Haruna Salamatu who qualified for the main draw through the preliminary stage.

Even though it wasn’t a tough match for the two-time champion, it was rather good for her confidence going into subsequent matches.

Edwards on the other hand, caused an unprecedented upset by defeating one of the top seeds, Blessing Anuna, in two straight sets.

The former IMG Academy student won the match 6-4, 6-2 to set up a clash against qualifier Omotayo Blessing, which the former is expected to also win.

In the Men’s Singles, Abdulmumin Babalola could not continue his quest for a seventh title win as he had to bow out in his matxh against Iloputa Ikechukwu.

Babalola, the tournament’s number three seed, had first defeated young Michael Ayoola, but couldn’t withstand the thrusts by Iloputa, fondly called Isner.

The former Nigerian number one lost 6-3, 6-7(1), 6-3, a result which clearly showed how much he battled against his lanky opponent.

Results from other matches played were also obtained by Nigeria Tennis Live and are presented to our readers.
