Destiny Okhinaye has won her second consecutive junior title after defeating Blessing Otu in the finals of the MP Tiger Tennis Foundation competition held in Lagos.

Both players, who are friends off the court, played their second final against each other after facing each other at the Lagos Schools’ Tennis Championship recently held inside the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Okhinaye, one of Nigeria’s talented young players, won the youth category of the competition which was held inside the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, on Sunday, 6 November, 2023, by beating Otu, 6-1, 6-1.

The toughest match on the day, however, was the tie between Daniel Adeleye and Abubakar Yusuf, which set the tone for what to come in Nigerian tennis.

Adeleye, the second highest ranked Nigerian player on the Junior ITF rankings, was a thorn in the flesh of Abubakar, winner of the youth category at the recently-concluded UTR Tournament in Lagos.

Both players gave a good account of themselves as they both took one set apiece before settling the score in the final set. The match ended 1-6, 6-3,10-4 in favour of Adeleye.

Nigerians need to keep an eye on both players in the coming months as they are set to dominate the local stage in a matter of time.

In other categories, Zara Adegoke beat Tesese Ahenjir 10-3, 10-9 in the female Red Ball finale while Abdulmaleek Salau won against Akanimo Otube for the boys. He won 10-8, 10-5.

Ashim Gazah and Devine Ezaka slugged it out in the boys 10 final which was won 8-0 by the former while Mobubat Razaki took the girls 10 trophy after beating Glory Akpan 8-1 in the finals.

The boys 12 and Unders saw Kingsley Godwin show great composure to defeat Daniel Israel in a final set thriller. He won 4-1, 2-4, 10-5, but his sister Success Godwin, playing in her first ever final, was made to wait for her first title. She lost 1-4, 1-4 to Joy Emmanuel.

Joel Benjamin of the Apapa Tennis Club battled hard to defeat national player, Joel Michael in a keenly contested Boys 14 & Unders final, winning 7-6 (4), 6-3 just as Bright Emmanuel outshined her sister Justina, in a two-set thriller, winning 6-3, 6-1.
