VEMP Open: Adeleye Upsets Atseye As Ayegbusi, Others Win Opening Matches (Full Result/Fixtures)
Daniel Adeleye, Nigeria’s highest ranked junior player on the ITF rankings, was one of the stars of the Day one at the ongoing VEMP Open in Abuja.
The talented player who recently returned from Ghana and Ivory Coast where he participated in four weeks of Junior ITF Championship, played a final set match against the highly experienced Henry Atseye.
Adeleye put up a huge fight against the 2023 Dala Hard Court winner and rightly took the first set, but he lost the second set and was made to fight for the final set. He would later pick up in the final set and win the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Mubarak Ganiyu, who played through the qualifying rounds, was also a handful when he played against top player, Timibra Godsgift in one of today’s matches.
The Ibadan boy caused a lot of problems for Timibra as he won the match in two well fought sets, winning 6-3, 7-6(0).
The other top seeds, David Ekpenyong and Uche Oparaoji wasted no time in seeing off their opponents as they cruised to two sets wins during their matches to set up second round ties against other winners.

In the Women’s event, Etoro Bassey was a clear winner when played against Blessing Anuna, winning 6-2, 6-3 and will now face the number one seed, Anu Ayegbusi, who won her match against Mariam Salami 6-0, 6-1.
The Women’s number two seed, Khadijat Mohammed, was in fine form when she played against Ekiti State’s Aina Goodnews, winning 6-3, 6-2 just as Success Ogunjobi overcame Emmanuella Bebe 6-1, 6-2 in the other match.
