Rainoil Tennis Open: Marylove, McCleod Renew Rivalry In Lagos

Nigeria’s number one female tennis player, Marylove Edwards will Wednesday come up against Angel McCleod in her second round match at the ongoing Rainoil Tennis Open Championship in Lagos.

The match which promises to be a cracker will be between two youngsters who are known for their abilities and for their dominance of Nigerian junior tennis a few years ago, will be battling for a place in the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.

While McCleod has not been consistent on the Nigerian circuit for some time, Edwards has dominated in most of the national tournaments and has risen to become Nigeria’s number one player in the process.

McCleod who got into the Main Draws by playing in the qualifying rounds, strolled past fellow qualifier, Taiwo Afolabi in two short sets of 4-0, 4-0 but will have the true test of her ability when she comes up against her former juniors rival.

The reigning VEMP Open Champion, on the other hand, had an easy passage into the second round of the Rainoil Tennis Open Championship by defeating Chidinma Eze, a Wild Card entrant in two quick sets. She defeated her opponent 4-0, 4-0.

Already, Edwards has told Nigeria Tennis Live that she is in the competition because she intends to win, and even though opposition may be stiff, her sights are set on the ultimate prize.

“I believe I can win the competition, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could win,” she had said in a brief interview on the sidelines.

Both players will square up against each other in one of the early matches on Day Three of the ongoing competition holding at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep updating our followers and readers from across the globe on the latest happenings at the Rainoil Tennis Open which is paying a total of N6.12million in prize money.
