Wheelchair Tennis: Nigeria’s Alex, Yusuf Defeat Hapless Tanzanian, Kenyan; Set Up Semis Cracker As Nairobi Open Gathers Steam

Nigeria’s Alex Adewale and Wasiu Yusuf have both qualified for the semis of the ongoing Nairobi Open in Nairobi, Kenya, Nigeria Tennis Live can authoritatively report.

The Nigerian pair who were seeded two and four respectively for the competition which ends on Wednesday, 13 February, will both clash in the semi finals of the event after defeating Tanzanian and Kenyan players.

Adewale, ranked 139 in the world had thrashed Tanzania’s Novatus Temba in two straight sets of 6-1, 6-2 in the first round before seeing off Samadu Sofo from Ghana 6-3, 7-5 to set up a clash against his Nigerian counterparts.

On his own part, Yusuf outplayed Shabaan Matano in two quick sets of 6-0, 6-0, setting up a clash against Henry Odiyo, whom he defeated 6-1, 6-2.

The other Nigerian players in the tournament also made it beyond the first round of the competition, but could not match the firepower of their opponents in the second round.

Alex and Yusuf partnered in the doubles event to cause havoc against their Nigerian counterparts. They will now fight for a place in the finals when they face Kenyan oppositions in the semis of the team event.

In the female category, Kafayat Omisore kept the country’s flag flying with her scintillating performance against Kenya’s Elizabeth Njoki. The Nigerian star won in two straight sets of 6-0, 6-0 to qualify for the semis.

The number four seed for the tournament will now face off against Mariska Venta, the number two seed from South Africa in an explosive match on Tuesday, 12 February.
