The 2023 Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship is experiencing an unprecedented but not unexpected influx of young Nigerian players in the main draw.

According to the draw obtained by Nigeria Tennis Live, the competition holding in Kano State is being serenaded by a number of players who are still making waves in the junior cadre of tennis in the country.

The likes of African number one Under-14 player, Seun Ogunsakin; 2023 UTR Championship winner, Abubakar Yusuf; Lagos Schools’ Tennis Championship Winner, Destiny Okhinaye and one of Nigeria’s most dreaded U-14 juniors, Khadijat Mohammed, are among the players holding sway in Kano.

In the matches played on Monday, 13 November, 2023 one of the youngsters already created an unprecedented upset, as she saw off the tournament’s number two seed in two hard fought sets.

The upset came in the Women’s Singles match where Mary Udoffa ensured that Stella Udokwelu, the competition’s number two seed, left the competition very early in a dramatic fashion. She won 6-4, 7-6(5).

Another interesting match up in the Women’s Singles that left tongues wagging was the victory of Timipre Maxwell over another top seed, Omolayo Bamidele, in a match that was a battle from start to finish.

Maxwell came out tops in that encounter, winning a three-set thriller 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to set up a mouth watering tie against Okhinaye, who also had to deal with Favour Moses in her first match. Their match ended 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Tuesday’s line up of matches is majorly focused on the Men’s Singles which will see some of the best tennis players take to the court.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep all our readers updated on the latest results from the matches and all the fixtures from the Dala Hard Court Championship in Kano.
