The 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day set aside to remember Nigeria’s fallen heroes and living veterans became a day which the fallen heroes would have been extremely be proud of and those still standing will forever cherish.

On 15 January, every year, the federal government of Nigeria honors the servicemen and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces, as well as veterans of World War I and II and the Nigerian Civil War.

And the Tennis Section of the Lagos Country Club ensured that the 2023 edition did not end without something to cheer about as they celebrated the war veterans and fallen heroes with a commemorative tennis competition.

The extremely colourful event started with the release of balloons of peace in the place of the usual dove being released on Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

No fewer than 40 Officers polled from Ikeja Cantonment, Airforce Base, Naval Base, Police College Ikeja were hosted by the Lagos Country Club to an Armed Forces Remembrance Day Games, an event which was proudly sponsored by Nigerian Breweries and MTN.

Nigeria Tennis Live also gathered that Legion Officers were invited to witness the competition and were awarded after the event.

Right before the event started, the participants and organizers were beaming with smiles and excitement as the guests trickled in one after the other.

After registration of participants had been concluded and the draws had been made, the players settled down for action. Let the games begin, the umpire ruled!

One would have thought that these Officers would have substituted their abilities with their expertise at wielding guns and weapons, but they left nothing to the spectators’ imaginations, as they hit the tennis balls, one stroke at a time, with panache and class.

The spectators cheered them on as the night grew thin and the competition neared its climax. Winners eventually emerged and it was time to hand the participants their gifts and awards.

The sponsors, Nigerian Breweries and MTN, were excited to have partnered with the Lagos Country Club to host the Armed Forces Remembrance Games as the participants showed a lot of gratitude for the honour.

After receiving their awards and gifts, the war veterans and attendees at the event would not stop talking about the competition as it was a first for them, and nothing prepared them for such an amazing outing.

“It was a really beautiful event, the participants really loved it and would not stop talking about,” Mr. Omon, the tennis club captain at the Lagos Country Club told Nigeria Tennis Live after the competition.

The event did not end without the tennis section of the Lagos Country Club showing their appreciation in cash to the Nigerian Legion Officers in attendance.

A donation of N530,000 was made to the Nigerian Legion Officers, a gesture which was well received and hugely appreciated by the recipients.

After the event had been concluded, there was still time for more. Members of the Tennis Section of the Lagos Country Club hit the dance floor as they celebrated Nigeria’s heroes with beautiful dance steps.

The after party was as colourful as the entire competition as the fallen Nigerian heroes and war veterans keep being remembered and honored for their service to the nation and humanity.
