In-form Lucky Danjuma Upsets Top Seed To Reach J60 Accra Q/final

For the second consecutive week, Nigeria’s Lucky Danjuma has reached the quarterfinal stage of the ongoing J60 Accra junior ITF tournament in Ghana.

Danjuma upset the tournament’s number one seed to reach the final of the event in Ghana last week, and moved about 705 spots on the junior ITF ranking in the subsequent week.

To reach the quarterfinal of his second consecutive J60 event in Accra, the Abuja-based youngster defeated home favourite, Raphael Nii Nortei Dowuona, in a final set thriller.

Dowuona, the tournament’s number five seed and winner of J30 Accra title in week one of the junior ITF event, was eased out of the competition by the combative Danjuma who has been stunning all week.

The Nigerian player won the match 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 to set up a quarterfinal clash against fellow Nigerian, Prosperity Ikenna Okonkwo.

As it stands, a Nigerian is guaranteed a spot in the semifinals of the J60 event for the second consecutive week but it is yet to be seen which player it will be.

In the other quarterfinal matches involving Nigerian players, Daniel Adeleye will be trading serves with Gurbaaz Narang from India.

Also, Franklin Jimoh, finalist in week one of the J30 Accra event, will be facing a tough opponent for a spot in the semis when he takes on number one seed, Francky Hoimian from Cote D’Ivoire.

Hoimian reached the semis of the week two of the J60 event last week only to be sent packing by the dangerous Danjuma, en route to reaching his first ever J60 final.

All eyes will be on the matches between the Nigerian players as well as the one between Jimoh and Hoimian who represented his country in the 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group III Qualifier in Abuja.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep tabs on the activities of the players in Accra and report to our teeming audience scattered across the globe.
