Ikechukwu Iloputa, a 25-year-old Nigerian tennis player from Enugu State, has been impressing fans and critics alike with his skill and dedication on the court.
His journey into tennis began in 2005, when he was just 10 years old. Growing up in Enugu, he was exposed to the game at the Enugu Sports Club, where he would watch professional players train and compete. Inspired by their talent and passion, Iloputa decided to pick up a racket and give the game a try.
“I was immediately drawn to the game,” Iloputa recalled.

“I loved the speed, agility, and strategy involved in tennis. I knew from that moment on that I wanted to become a professional tennis player.”
His talent and dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2012, he caught the attention of Mr. Albert Anele, a local businessman who was impressed by the young player’s potential.
Anele offered to sponsor Ikechukwu’s tennis career, providing him with the financial support he needed to pursue his dream.
“Mr. Anele’s sponsorship was a game-changer for me,” the 2024 DavNotch Open Semifinalist said.
“It allowed me to focus on my training and compete in tournaments that I wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise. I am forever grateful for his support.”
With Anele’s support, Iloputa began competing in local and national tournaments. He quickly made a name for himself in the Nigerian tennis scene, winning several junior and senior titles.

In 2014, he made his international debut at the ITF tournament in Lagos, where he impressed fans with his skill and determination.
Since then, this player has competed in numerous tournaments across Nigeria and West Africa, winning several titles and earning a reputation as one of the region’s top players.
Despite his success, Iloputa faces several challenges in his tennis career. One of the biggest obstacles is the lack of sponsorship and support for tennis in Nigeria.
“Tennis is not a priority sport in Nigeria,” he explained, “as a result, we don’t have the same level of support and resources as other sports like football and basketball. It can be difficult to find sponsors and funding to support our training and competition.”
Despite these challenges, however, Iloputa remains motivated and focused on his goals. He cites Rafael Nadal as his biggest inspiration, admiring the Spanish tennis star’s dedication, passion, and success on the court.
“Nadal’s career record is a constant source of motivation for me,” he said. “He is a true champion who has achieved greatness through hard work and determination. I aspire to follow in his footsteps and make a name for myself in the world of tennis.”

Iloputa’s ultimate goal is to become a professional tennis player, competing at the highest level in international tournaments. He plans to continue training and competing, with the aim of representing Nigeria in the Davis Cup and other international competitions.
“I want to make a name for myself in tennis and bring glory to my country,” Ikechukwu said. “I believe that with hard work, dedication, and the right support, I can achieve my dreams and become a champion in the world of tennis.”
In the heart of Nigeria’s South East region, a sports revolution is underway. Tennis, a niche sport in the country, has found a fertile ground in states like Enugu, Anambra, and Imo. Ikechukwu attests to the sport’s surging popularity in the region.
“Tennis is popular in the South East, especially in Enugu, Anambra, and Imo,” the Nigerian tennis star said assuredly. “We have some of the best tennis courts in Nigeria, and I believe we can produce top players with the right support and opportunities.”
