John David, smarting from upsetting the tournament’s number one seed, Uche Oparaoji, has played his way into the quarterfinals of the Dala Hard Court Championship in Kano.

He defeated fellow qualifier, Ibrahim Sulaiman, in the second round in a match that was a battle between the pair before ending 7-6(1), 6-3 in the ancient city of Kano.

David, who got into the Main Draw of the national competition via the qualifying series, will be hoping to continue his fairytale run in the tournament when he comes up against Godsgift Timibra in the quarterfinal match on Thursday, 16 November, 2023.

Another impressive result on Wednesday was that of teenage sensation Khadijat Mohammed outplaying Mary Udoffa to qualify for the semifinal Women’s Singles event.

Khadijat, the second female player with a wild card slot, has not stopped impressing since her first match in the competition.

The Abuja-based youngster has now defeated Udoffa on her way to reaching the semis of the Women’s Singles. She won the match 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-4 to set up a meeting against Favour Moses who has been outstanding all week.

With US-based Marylove Edwards not participating in the competition and Uche Oparaoji already knocked out, the Dala competition will witness a new champion in the Women and Men’s Singles event.

Odds-on favourite to win the tournament is Anu Aiyegbusi, aka Madam Consistent as she remains the player to beat in this year’s event.

Nigerians will be watching keenly to see who makes it to the final and also watch closely how the final match pans out.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep updating all our readers on the developments from Kano as the tournament approaches the business end.

All the results from today’s matches and the fixtures for Thursday have been uploaded on the fixtures/results tab on our website, kindly check.
