BREAKING! Adeleye, Danjuma, Mohammed, Bassey Reach Career-High Ranking

Nigerian players have reached career-high ranking spots in the newly-released update by the ITF after a splendid performance at the J60 Accra event.

Nearly all the Nigerian players who participated in the tournament boosted their rankings to the highest they’ve ever had according to the new ranking points.

Daniel Adeleye who won the J60 Boys’ Singles title after defeating fellow Nigerian, Lucky Danjuma, soared as high as he could as he reached a career-high ranking of 287, dragging him close to Seun Ogunsakin (266), the highest-ranked Nigerian on the junior ITF ratings.

For his efforts and unprecedented run at the J60 Accra event, Danjuma moved a massive 705 spots to now rank 1057 and sit among the best Nigerian players on the ITF ranking while Franklin Jimoh who lost in the semis of the event, also reached a career-high 639 ranking spot.

Despite retiring in the quarterfinal of the tournament, J30 Accra winner, Prosperity Okonkwo managed to move to reach his highest-ever ranking spot as he now occupies the 540th spot in the world and the third highest by a Nigerian.

Khadijat Mohammed continued to move upwards, and gradually posing a threat to Ohunene Yakubu’s stronghold on the number one spot by a Nigerian female player on the junior ITF rankings.

The Abuja-based youngster cracked the top 1000 rankings and now ranks 981st in the world after moving 37 spots but it was Success Ogunjobi’s movement that was the highest for the Nigerian girls.

Ogunjobi had a fantastic start to the J60 event and rightly sits 1582 after moving 127 spots on the recently-released ratings but she still has a lot to do, to cover the gap between herself and the top three Nigerian female players.

For instance, Etoro Bassey of the GEUF Tennis Academy in Akwa-Ibom, made a quantum leap and narrowly missed out on cracking the top 1000. She moved 118 spots to maintain stay third among the Nigerian female players and sit 1019 in the world.

With the J60 Accra event presenting another opportunity for the Nigerian players to pick valuable points and further shoot themselves upwards, Nigerians will be looking forward to another stellar performance by the youngsters.
