Billie Jean King Cup: Tears Rolled Down My Dad’s Eyes When He Saw My Name On The List – Asogba

Toyin Asogba has spoken about being included in the Nigerian team to participate at the Billie Jean King Cup event in Nairobi, Kenya.

The athlete who left the country to train and play tournaments in France was included in the team as announced by Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) and published by Nigeria Tennis Live.

And since this was the first time she was listed to participate in the competition, the reaction from her family to the announcement was quite ecstatic.

Asogba told Nigeria Tennis Live that her dad, particularly, broke down in tears after seeing her name on the list, asking her not to joke with him.

“So, on Friday, a friend sent the post to me and said congratulations. I checked and I did not believe then I checked your page (Nigeria Tennis Live) and saw it.

“When I got home, I showed my dad, and he said it’s a lie, that I should not joke with him. He was shocked so much that tears just rolled down because it is a lot,” the player explained

“It really means a lot me too, I cried because I did not really believe it then I showed it to my sister. She told my mom and she started singing and dancing,” she added.

Team Nigeria came fifth at the last qualifying rounds, and will be competing against 10 other countries in Africa Group III from which one team will gain promotion to Group II.

The week-long event will hold from 10-15 June, 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, and Team Nigeria is expected to leave the country on 7 June, 2024.
