Nigeria’s first test at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III qualifier ended up on a remarkable note for the tennis queens.

The Nigerian trio of Oyinlomo Quadre, Divine Nweke and Adesuwa Osabuohien made light the match against their Ugandan opponents, winning all three rubbers emphatically.

US-based Quadre who flew in on Sunday night, started the mauling when she defeated Patience Athieno in two straight sets of 6-0, 6-1 before Nweke added salt to the Ugandans’ injury.

The African Games star was even more emphatic in her match against Winnie Birungi, winning 6-0, 6-0 accompanied by five aces in the match that ended in exactly 40 minutes.

Osabuohien, fondly referred to as Ade Mama, would later partner Quadre to turn up the lights against the Ugandan pair of Abigail Mulungi and Maggie Namaganda for the third rubber, and win 6-1, 6-0 in 46 minutes.

Thus, the Nigerian team are sitting comfortably on Group C following Ghana’s 1-2 loss to Botswana on Monday, 10 June, 2024.

The Nigerian players will now seek to continue their fine run of form when they play Ghana in the second round robin match on Tuesday, 11 June, 2024.

A win for the Nigerian side will further cement their place in the group and put them in a good place to qualify as top of Group C, and giving the ladies a chance at gaining promotion to World Group II.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep updating all our followers and readers on all the latest information about the matches at the ongoing Billie Jean King Cup competition which ends on Saturday, 15 June, 2024.
