The second edition of the Azimuth Shipping Lines Junior Tennis Championships will hold towards the end of January, 2019, Nigeria Tennis Live has learnt.

Information made available to our correspondent has it that the tournament which is hosted by the VGC Tennis Club is another talent discovery event which gives educational grant as prize money.

The Captain S. O. Martins’ sponsored competition saw the youngsters compete in boys and girls 12, 14, 16 and 18 categories and the same will be the case when hostilities resume for the second edition which promises to be even bigger.

This medium gathered that the tournament is part of the company’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and as a result of the sponsor’s passion for tennis development.

Captain S. O. Martins poses with some 2018 winners of the tournament.

In a chat with Nigeria Tennis Live, one of the organisers of the competition, Coach Richard Inyang, informed that the event will come up from Monday, 21 to Saturday, 26 January.

According to him: “All the matches from the first stage to the semis will be played inside the tennis section of the national stadium, but the finals will be hosted by the VGC Tennis Club.”

On how to curb the challenges of age cheat and falsification of certificates, Coach Inyang noted that players will not be judged only based on their birth certificates, but by how well they play on the court.

While noting that he’s been in the business of coaching youngsters for long, the ever smiling coach stated that there will be no room for age cheats as the records are always there to prove them right or wrong.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep tabs with preparations towards the commencement of the competition as players begin to jostle for a place in the annual tournament.
