The Onitsha centre of the recently-concluded UTR Tournament has produced winners for the first time since the commencement of the competition in Nigeria.
Asides the competitive nature of the competition organized by the Tennis Players Parents Association (TPPA), the tournament brought alive the Onitsha Sports Club on Edgerton Road, as the witnessed non-stop tennis action like never before.
The youngsters, competing in the boys 12, 14, 16 and girls 14 categories, were made to sweat for their medals and earn their points, as well as their trip to Lagos for the Nationals holding in December.
Nigeria Tennis Live gathered that players from Imo State dominated the championship in the south east region with a total of 15 players while others came from Nnewi and the outskirts of Onitsha.
“Only two players participated from Onitsha,” Coach Tochukwu Ezeh, coordinator of the region, informed our correspondent.
“Due to lack of multiple female players the 12 and 14 girls were merged into one group of 14 girls,” he also added about the draws for the players.
After an eventful outing in Onitsha, winners emerged in different categories with the players going home with their medals as well as interesting gift items by the coordinators in the region.
Lucky Favour emerged as the winner in the girls 14 & Unders category just as Onuegbu Chimaobi clinched the boys 14 & Unders prize in Onitsha.
In the boys 16 & Under, Nwosu Henry emerged as the indisputable champion while Ndem Samuel capped up a good week by lifting the trophy as the boys 12 & Under winner.
