Only David Ekpenyong and Daniel Adeleye are the only Nigerian players who have scaled through to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Accra J100 event in Ghana.
The third player, Joseph Jimoh, could not make it past his opponent, the tournament’s number four seed, Debasis Sahoo from India.
The Indian player was made to sweat for his points, though, as he had to rely on a super tiebreak in the second set to edge out the determined Nigerian in a 6-1, 7-6(4) game.
Sahoo will now face another Nigerian in Adeleye, who saw off Maxine Dalard from Sweden 6-2, 6-4, if he must advance to the semis of the competition.
Ekpenyong, the tournament’s number three seed eased to a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 victory over Serbia’s Mateya Stanisavljevic to book his spot in the quarterfinal of the Grade 3 competition.
To earn a right to play in the semis, the Nigerian number one player will have to overcome Ghana’s Raphael Nii Ankrah, who is seeded seven for this event.
Nigerians, both at home and in Ghana, will be rooting for their players to make it to the last four and possibly win the event for the second consecutive week.
