Again, Igbinovia Upsets Top Seed, Lands In Dala Hard Court Semis
Wilson Igbinovia, arguably Nigeria’s hottest junior at the moment, has caused another upset at the Dala Hard Court tournament in Kano.
The teenager responsible for the exit of Musa Mohammed, the tournament’s number five seed, fought really hard to defeat pre-tournament and former champion, Thomas Otu, in a two-set thriller.
Igbinovia was made to fight for the points he made in his quest to make a mark at the tournament in Kano as he looks increasingly like a favourite to reach the final.
He had to give it his all as he battled the former Nigerian number one to a 7-6(3), 6-4 win after an energy-sapping encounter.
With this win, many will be on the lookout for the Nigerian power player as one of the favourites to reach the final and possibly win it.
Igbinovia will now face Peter Lawal, a giant killer who also ensured the exit of Nomso Madueke, the tournament’s number two seed, from the competition.
Lawal, an unsung hero, fought tooth and nail and worked his socks off to defeat his opponent, a senior national player, in two sets that seemed like a final set encounter.
At the end of the day, the crowd at the tennis center in Kano were thrown into a wild appreciation of the youngster after the unprecedented 7-66), 7-6(4) win.
Meanwhile, Marylove Edwards and Aanu Aiyegbusi are set to clash in the Women’s Singles in a battle of the number one versus number two.
Both players have barely tested each other’s strength in major competitions and this final may yet present an opportunity for them to know who’s more in form.
