Nigeria’s Seun Ogunsakin has hit a new milestone after the recently released ranking by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

This new feat is coming despite his J200 Pretoria setback last week, where he could not overcome his opponent in the final, a feat which would have effectively shot him into the top 100 junior players in the world.

Ogunsakin, in spite of the defeat, moved about 44 places in the new world rankings, and is now rated 113 in the world. He leapfrogged other top African junior players to reach a new ranking level for Nigerian junior tennis players.

As at the last time the rankings were released, the former African number one U-14 player was ranked seventh in the whole of Africa, but after his unprecedented run at the J200 Pretoria event, he has surpassed that by quite a distance.

The Ekiti-born tennis teenager who was in contention to win the J200 this week, could also not find his mojo as he lost in the opening round of the competition despite having reached the final in the previous three weeks of playing in South Africa.

If the youngster continues at this rate, in the coming months, he may have secured his spot in the main draw or qualifying rounds of any of the Grand Slams.

Recall that Ogunsakin played the Orange Bowl event in 2023, as Africa’s number one U-14 player, and also participated in a Euro Tour event during which period he gained a lot of experience.

Nigerians, home and abroad, will be rooting for the youngster as he continues in his quest to make the most of the remaining years as a junior player on the ITF circuit.

Nigeria Tennis Live will also keep our readers abreast of the latest information about the youngster as he continues with his tennis development.
