Jimoh, Bassey, Danjuma March On In Ghana As J30 Accra Hots Up

The trio of Franklin Jimoh, Etoro Bassey and Lucky Danjuma are the only Nigerians left at the ongoing J30 Accra Junior ITF Event in Ghana.

Of the nine Nigerian players who made it to the Main Draw, only these three could reach the quarterfinals of the tournament after some beautiful performances.

Jimoh, the tournament’s number one seed, had to come from behind in his match against relentless Finlay Whitrow from Great Britain, as the youngster stunned him in the first set.

The talented Nigerian, however, ensured he ended the game on a high, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinal where he will be up against Harel Tarshish from Israel.

Danjuma was also at his very best when he played his second round match against India’s Rohan Karthik Vunnam despite having to trail after the first set of the encounter.

The Abuja-based youngster found his mojo in the second set and made sure he handed his opponent an infamous win with the match ending 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in favour of the Nigerian. He will now battle the number two seed, Raphael Nii Nortei Dowuona for a semis spot.

Bassey, the only Nigerian female left in the competition, was Great Britain’s Ashleigh Hannah, winning 6-1, 6-1 against the power playing youngster.

The Nigerian will face a fierce test in her quest to reach the semifinal of the event when she comes up against fans’ favourite and number two seed, Sisu Tomegah, in the quarterfinal.

Nigerians will be hoping to see one of her youngsters win this event which is the first of a six-week Junior ITF competition in neighbouring Ghana.
