The organizers of the forthcoming Amazons Tennis Tournament have hinted on plans to make the event an international tournament.

The Amazons Tennis Tournament which started in 2025 to celebrate the International Women’s Day, has now become a regular event for women in Lagos, as the organizers look forward to the second edition.

Nigeria Tennis Live reports that the female-only competition is organized by PDWheels Media, a media consulting firm run by Ambassador Joy Obayemi, popularly known as Punjah. The tournament attracted over 100 women during its inaugural edition in 2025.

Obayemi, while shedding more light on the desire to see the event become a global entity, stated that the tournament was conceived from “a place of passion and love for the racket sport that has given me so much in life; physically, mentally and socially.

“I specifically chose women only for this tournament as most clubs and courts are filled with men and most competitions have more men as representatives so focusing on women is to build a strong tennis community of women and to increase the the level of competitiveness”.

While speaking on the choice of the International Women’s Day as to host the event now considered as the biggest in Africa, the well-traveled Sports Journalist explained that “choosing the International Women’s Day is very significant as we join the global community in celebrating women’s power, strength and lending our voices to health challenges facing women through sports.

“Funding has been very challenging mostly because of the level the tournament has risen to, the first edition we had 86 women, on record this year we have 124 women who have registered and some are on the waiting list.

“If we had good financial support, we would have accommodated more. We need both financial support and products to make the day a memorable one. We need more support as the event comes with a lot of financial commitment”.

Punjah revealed the organization’s plans to make the event an international tournament which will also attract rankings.

She said: “Our long term goal is to make it an international competition where recreational players from across the world can travel to Nigeria to come compete at the Amazons tennis tournament with juicy prize money to be won as part of empowerment.

“Also we have plans to make the Amazons tournament a ranking event to make the competition more competitive as players will be looking for how the better their game and sharpen their skills.

“One of our futuristic plans is to have our young National Ranked female players have a stand alone tournament (The Amazons Junior Championship – AJC) to increase the level of tennis tournament in Nigeria for the female players.

“We hope to continue building on our success story and advocate for more women – both old and young – to join the sport, partner with the State government and corporate organizations for funding and not only have this event annually but have two major tournaments in a year for women and our young girls”.

The 2026 edition of the Amazons Tennis Tournament is scheduled to hold on Saturday, 28 March, 2026, inside the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan-Lagos and attendance is free.
