Nigeria’s team to the Davis Cup Africa Group III in Zimbabwe may have qualified for the World Group II Playoffs again after a 3-0 thrashing of the hosts.

The Nigerian team comprising Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel, Daniel Adeleye and Christopher Bulus captained by Coach Benson Ishicheli, ran riots against Zimbabwe in the third match of the competition, to record their second win at the event.

And the win automatically puts Nigeria (with a game in hand) ahead of Algeria who are fourth on the log and have only won one of their four matches at the ongoing tournament at the Harare Sports Club, Zimbabwe.

Daniel Adeleye, Nigeria’s number one player, started the impressive run with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Courtney Lock before ATP player, Christopher Bulus outplayed Mehluli Sibanda 6-4, 6-4 in the second rubber.

The third and final rubber was prosecuted by the pair of Michael Emmanuel and Daniel Adeleye who were unplayable against Lock and Ethan Sibanda as they won 6-3, 6-1 to complete the rout for the Nigerian side in Zimbabwe.

Thus, the team’s last match against Senegal, the table toppers, will be a mere formality since Nigeria already won two from three matches and are currently third on the log while Algeria, who are currently occupying fourth, have played four and won only one.

After the confirmation of the development, an excited Coach Ishicheli told Nigeria Tennis Live that “we are back in World Group II” before adding that “we await the draws in December” in reference to the draws to determine our opponents in the World Group II playoffs.

Bulus, Nigeria’s team leader also posted a video on his Instagram story with the text “wearing the ‘Nigerian’ colours back to Group 2” an indication that Nigeria already qualified for the World Group II playoffs.

Nigeria’s qualification for the playoffs is coming barely six months after a 1-3 loss to South Africa during the World Group II playoffs in Pretoria.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep all our readers posted on latest development from Zimbabwe ahead of the final showdown on Saturday, 16 August, 2025.
