Nigeria’s superstar tennis player, Oyinlomo Quadre, has revealed plans to join a new university after quitting the Florida International University (FIU).

The former world number 93 junior tennis player who joined FIU in January 2023, revealed in an exclusive chat with Nigeria Tennis Live, that she would be joining Oklahoma University (OU) ranked 6 in American Collegiate Tennis.

According to her, the tough decision to join OU out of the 72 Division 1 Universities that showed interest in her was because the institution and the people resonated more with her aspirations.

“I left FIU because of my future plans. I’ve wanted to play pro, it has always been my plan even before I got into College and now, I’m ready to prioritize that again (of course after getting my degree).

“I have just one year and I’m trying to make all the sacrifices in order to transition properly and one of the sacrifices is going somewhere tougher where I’ll be able to play a tougher schedule and tougher matches, and this was why I decided to enter the (transfer) portal,” Quadre, the only player to win the Nigeria Slam, told our correspondent.

Speaking further, she explained that: “Actually, there were so many schools that picked my interest. It was like a very tough decision because a lot of the top schools I was considering were willing to offer me almost the same as OU.

“OU just seems special to me because I love the programme, I love the people especially, and it just seems to resonate with me more on a personal level so that’s why it was my final decision at the end”.

Among the institutions that expressed interest in the Africa Games silver medalist was Auburn University, where current Africa Games Singles gold medalist, Angella Okutoyi, is a student-athlete.

The 22-year-old who helped FIU win the Conference-USA for three consecutive years, was the first player in the institution’s history to win the Conference player and Freshman of the year awards in the same year.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep our readers updated on developments from the transfer once the deal has been finalized and her move confirmed by the institution.
