Kgadijat Mohammed has won the Women’s Singles event at the Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship in Kano, Nigeria Tennis Live has learnt.

The 14-year-old who has had an outstanding week left it all on the court in her match against Blessing Omotayo to win her first ever senior national title.

Mohammed who got a Wild Card to participate in the Main Draw of the tournament won the final tie 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, to join the legion of teenagers to have won the competition.

But without checking the record books, she may have been the youngest player to win the competition which is one of the oldest in Nigeria.

With this win, the youngster, ranked 30 in African Junior U-14 will believe that she is able to take on daunting tasks ahead of her as she has proven that younger players can hold their own against their senior counterparts.

In the Men’s Singles Semis determined on Friday, Abubakar Yusuf’s dream of reaching his first Senior Finale met a brick wall when he came up against former National Champion, Henry Atseye.

Atseye taught the youngster some tennis lessons even though he had to dig deep to outplay the younger player in a three-set thriller which ended 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2.

He will now play against Canice Abua who was also able to stop giant killer, John David, in the other semifinal match played on Friday. It ended 7-6(7), 6-4 in favour of Abua.

This final is one to watch as both players will want to make their entrance into the final count, especially Abua, who is playing his first ever senior national final.

Nigeria Tennis Live will give our followers all the updates from the final match slated to start by 3pm on Saturday, 17 November, 2023.
