Henry Atseye has moved up to fourth on the newly released rankings after winning his second ever Rainoil Tennis Open Championship over the weekend at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, Lagos.

Atseye emphatically defeated Joseph Imeh in two straight but hard sets of 7-6(4), 6-2 to emerge as the winner of most tournaments on clay court in Nigeria in recent years, and this has shot him up the rankings.

Before the commencement of the competition, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Open champion was ranked 9th in Nigeria with 118 points.

The newly released rankings have now shot Atseye up to 4th on the list with 200 additional points.

Also, Marylove Edwards will be ending the year as Nigeria’s number one player for the first time ever even though she lost in the final to Oyinlomo Quadre. Their match ended 6-4, 6-1.

Quadre who says it was inevitable that she’d have dropped points, spots on the rankings, says she is not particularly bothered about the year ending rankings.

“I was really interested in playing the Grand Slams but injury played a role in ensuring that it didn’t happen,” the Billie Jean King Cup player told Nigeria Tennis Live.

Other players also moved up the log according to the newly released rankings made available to Nigeria Tennis Live.
