US-based talented Nigerian tennis player, Serena Teluwo, says she is now ripe and ready to represent Nigeria at the Billie Jean King Cup event.

The Shaw University student who was recently crowned the Rookie of the year after a scintillating tennis year for her school’s female tennis team, has been in a great form all year.

She capped the season by winning handsomely for her D2 University to show that her form has not been a fluke.

Fortunately, Nigeria is currently preparing to participate at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III qualifier event which will be hosted by Kenya, and Serena believes she is now ready.

In a chat with Nigeria Tennis Live, she revealed how she won the Rookie of the year award and what her immediate plans are as the season ends.

“I didn’t see it coming. Because as a freshman, you have to really put in a lot.

“A lot of people had mentioned it before, they said if you play a number of games, you might win the Rookie of the Year award,” Serena noted about her Rookie of the year award.

Asked whether she believes she is now ready to represent Nigeria at the international event, she said: “It has always been one of my dreams to represent Nigeria, of course I have always done that, but that was in the juniors.

“I think I’m now ready for the Billie Jean King Cup because this is my Freshman year and I’ve seen what I can handle and everything going on around me”.

Serena then shed more light on her immediate plans post-season. According to her: “We’re going for the Championships from our school soon.

“I can play ITF Tournaments, but I’ll have to check the schedule, because I need to know which is best. But I know for sure that I’ll be playing tennis tournaments this summer.”

Nigeria’s team to the last Billie Jean King Cup event in Kenya in 2023 comprised of Oyinlomo Quadre, Adesuwa Osabuohien, Sarah Adegoke, Divine Nweke and Marylove Edwards.
