Tombim Abuja ITF Futures: Moses Only Nigerian In Singles Q/Finals

Michael Moses is Nigeria’s only flagbearer in the Singles Event at the ongoing Tombim Abuja ITF Open in Package B of the National Stadium, Abuja

Michael Moses saved Nigeria’s blushes as he was the only Nigerian player to qualify for the Quarterfinal stage of the ongoing Tombim Abuja ITF Futures.
Nigeria’s chances of progressing to the Quarterfinal stage of the competition had suffered a huge setback when Clifford Enosoregbe and Christian Paul both lost out to Deiton Baughman and Nedunchezhiyan Jeevan by 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-0 respectively, in their early matches on Wednesday.
Henry Atseye lost to Evan Song, -3, 6-1; Albert Bikom was outplayed by Crowley Keith-Patrick 7-6 (1), 6-1, Thomas Otu fought hard against number two seed, Tucker Vorster, but lost 6-4, 7-6 (5).
However, Moses rallied to defeat number eight seed, Alcaraz Cortes, 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-2, to a loud uproar by the teeming Abuja fans watching the game.
The 2014 Abridged Governor’s Cup Winner will now come up against number four seed, Matija Pecotic in one of the quarterfinal games to be decided tomorrow.
As at the time of compiling this report, the Nigerians in the doubles were already preparing to go on court in a bid to snatch Semifinal tickets.
Moses told journalists after the game that, “I just kept up with the game, I did not think of losing because since he could win the first set, I was certain of overcoming him in the second set and I did just that.
“I hope I can continue with this pace and get to the Semis. This is the least target I have set for myself in this competition.
“I was not happy when I heard that my friends had lost out in their matches. That made me fight more in order to come out tops in the game. I am really happy to have won.
“There is an injury to my right wrist and it affected me when I was playing my game. I could not hit balls that came to my backhand properly but I still managed to win. I truly thank God for this victory”.

  1. Moses has shown that we have the champs here. I believe that with "better environment", our players will give their counterparts a run for their money
