Seun Ogunsakin is close to becoming an elite African junior tennis starlet after reaching an unprecedented height in the recent junior ITF ranking.

The 15-year-old Nigerian tennis sensation has been on an upward rise in recent months, winning junior ITF events as well as playing in some of the biggest tournaments around.

Alongside seven others, Ogunsakin recently participated in three weeks of J100, J200 and J300 ITF tournaments in South Africa and while he was unable to go beyond the second rounds in the J200 and J300, he dazzled his way into the semis of the J100 event.

His consistency and growth on the court have now been rewarded with a new career-high junior ITF ranking which was released on Monday.

From being 314 in the world, Ogunsakin is now rated 267 in the new ranking, an indication that he has been growing tremendously in the past few months.

The Tunisia-based youngster will relish the opportunity to improve his ranking and possibly reach top 100 in the world if he continues with this level of performance.

He has also further increased the gap between him and Daniel Adeleye on the top two highest-ranked Nigerian junior players on the junior ITF rankings.

Prosperity Ikenna Okonkwo, winner of the second leg of the J30 Accra event also moved significantly on the log as he reached his highest ranking ever. He moved from being 691 in the world to occupying the 566th spot.

Also, Mubarak Ganiyu who reached the semifinal of the J30 Accra tournament, is now rated 782 in the world, reaching his highest ranking position ever on the junior ITF rankings.

In the female category, Etoro Bassey kept pressure on Khadijat Mohammed in the race for top two female Nigerian players on the ITF ranking after picking valuable points last week.

She gained a few points for her performance and now occupies 1137th spot just behind Mohammed while Toluwalashe Agunbiade continued her slow but steady rise on the log.

With the J60 Accra event which started this week, there are higher chances for Nigerian players to close the gap on Ogunsakin who seems to be running away as Nigeria’s highest junior player on the ITF.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep tabs on the players’ performance in the coming weeks and share with our teeming audience, how they’re faring.
