Nigeria Planning To Host Challenger Series In 2021 – NTF President

There are strong indications that the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) may be hosting a Challenger series in year 2021.

For a few years, the federation had been mooting the idea of having a Challenger series in the country to boost the chances of Nigerian players playing top quality competitions, especially within the country.

The Lagos Open, among other World Tour Circuit events in the country, had been on the radar of being converted to the Challenger Series to attract more top stars to the country.

President of the NTF, Engr. ‘Dayo Akindoju, in a recent discussion with Nigeria Tennis Live, hinted that there are high chances of the country hosting a Challenger in 2021, with talks at an advanced stage.

He said: “We are working on an approval from the ITF to host a Challenger Series in 2021 in Abuja.

“Actually, talks are at an advanced stage, and we have gone far with the discussion, so we stand a good chance of hosting the series next year.

“Plan is to host the tournament for two weeks in Abuja sometime in April, for two weeks at a stretch. In fact, it will be huge tournament in Nigeria which will involve the President and it will may be called the President’s Cup.”
