NCC Tennis League Finals: Team Tombim Hold Slim 2-1 Lead

Team Tombim of Abuja won the two men’s singles but lost the men’s doubles to hold a slim 2-1 lead against Team Civil Defence of Owerri on the first day of the championship tie of the NCC Tennis League at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
Moses Michael and Christian Paul of Tombim comfortably defeated Nonso Madueke and Abdulmumuni Babalola of Team Civil Defence 6-1 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3 respectively.

With their lead player Clifford Enosorogbe unavailable for selection at the last minute due to a wrist injury, the Civil Defence team appeared disoriented but they fought back to take the doubles with the experienced pair of Babalola and Shehu Lawal dispatching Michael and Paul 6-4, 6-3.

Saturday’s final matches, which begin at 10 am, will feature the ladies’ singles between Christie Agugbom of Civil Defence and Sarah Adegoke of Tombim, two men’s reverse singles and the mixed doubles.

The closing ceremonies schedule to start at 1 pm, in between the matches, is expected to feature traditional dances, entertainment and raffle draws as well as the presentation of trophies and prize monies.

Meanwhile, Henry Atseye, captain of the Tombim side, has expressed confidence in his players picking up the maximum points to emerge winner of the inaugural league competition in Nigeria.

In an exclusive chat with Naija Tennis Special, he said: “the boys have been very encouraging and that is what we have been asking them to do- play the very best game of tennis. 

“Hopefully, we shall clinch the N5million jackpot for the winning team tomorrow.”
