Buzzing Anu Aiyegbusi partnered with Osariemen Airhuwunde to win the first gold medal in the tennis event at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Edo State.

The players, both representing Edo State were too strong for the Team Kwara pair of Rachel Adunoye and Esther Olamide, as they perfected a 6=3, 6-2 win over their opponents.

The gold medal ensured that Edo State maintained their pursuit of Delta in the medals haul at the ongoing Festival, as they are hoping to host and win.

If Aiyegbusi defeats Sarah Adegoke in the Women’s Singles final, she will add to her gold medal at the ongoing competition, but failure will still mean she has two medals from the tournament.

Meanwhile, there was a huge upset in the Women’s Wheelchair Tennis finals, as crowd favourite and top Nigerian player, Kafayat Omisore was denied a gold medal in a three-set thriller.

Kemi Oluwasegun representing Rivers State proved to be the better player on the day as she battled against Omisore, a more experienced player, to deny Team Delta another medal swoop in the tennis event.

The Rivers player fought hard against Omisore to secure a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win, a result which must have shocked everyone who saw the pairings for the wheelchair tennis final.

As at the time of filing this report, Nigeria Tennis Live could not verify the results from other matches which were scheduled to be played on Monday, as the competition reaches its finale.

Calvin Hemery was scheduled to play against Uche Oparaoji in the Men’s Singles Final. Nigeria Tennis Live shall do well to bring the result of the encounter as soon as we have it.
