Michael, Adeleye Among Nigerian Players Listed For Davis Cup

Daniel Adeleye has made the cut for the Nigerian players listed to represent the country at the Davis Cup Africa Group III Qualifiers holding in Abuja.

Adeleye, Nigeria’s highest-ranked junior tennis player on the ITF rankings, has been outstanding all year, capping a fine six months with a J60 win in Abuja.

He is joined on the train by another newcomer, Michael Emmanuel, popularly known and addressed as ‘Akpan’.

The duo are the newest set of players representing the country at the Davis Cup event which Nigeria will be hoping to host and win, to secure qualification for the World Group II.

Completing the five-man team are US-based Christopher Bulus, who had an unbeaten start to his Davis Cup debut last year; David Ekpenyong, Nigeria’s current number one tennis player, and Uche Oparaoji, the most experienced player in the team.

Coach Benson Ishicheli who masterminded Nigeria’s qualification from Group IV in Rwanda will lead the players out to ensure Nigeria moves further upwards the log into World Group II.

Conspicuously missing in the team is another US-based player, Wilson Igbinovia, and Peter Lawal, both of who were in Rwanda when Nigeria reached the Group III of the African Group.

The listed players’ names were shared on the official Davis Cup website, where players from other countries were also named for the forthcoming competition.

Nigeria Tennis Live will continue to monitor the activities leading to the competition which serves off on Monday, 15 July and run till Saturday, 20 July, 2024, inside the tennis section of the National Stadium in Abuja.
