Lagos Open Tennis: Igbinovia, Friday, Other Nigerian Youngsters Impress As 2nd Leg Prelim Kicks Off
Nigerian junior players who are participating in the preliminary matches of the ongoing Lagos Open International Tennis Championship put up spirited displays in their first matches.
The youngsters proved how much they have come of age and how fearless they are against their more experienced counterparts.
The likes of Wilson Igbinovia, Gabriel Friday and Emmanuel Jebutu were shining stars in their respective matches, with Jebutu eventually losing out.
Igbinovia crushed Ghana’s Agassi Tomegah in two quick sets of 6-0, 6-1 in a game that ended under one hour while Friday was responsible for the defeat of Oche Emmanuel in a 6-2, 6-2 game.
Jebutu was unlucky against Darryl Hale from Great Britain as a super tie break had to determine the result of their match which went to his opponent. The match ended 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Elsewhere, Godsgift Timibra put up a classic performance to dislodge Davis Cup player Christian Paul in two straight sets of 6-2, 6-1 to complete another outstanding from Nigerian youngsters.
Nigeria’s number male tennis player, Sylvester Emmanuel also strolled past his Nigerian counterpart Augustine Stephen, winning 6-2, 6-4, while Albert Bikom dispatched America’s Goldenberg Dustin in a 6-3, 6-2 game.
Action will resume in the preliminary games on Tuesday morning as more Nigerian players seek qualification for the main draw of the ITF World Tour holding in Lagos.
