The second round match between Nigeria’s Oyinlomo Quadre and Ukraine’s Valeriya Strakhova at the ongoing Lagos Open International Tennis Championships looks like the biggest career test for the budding Nigerian tennis sensation, and she seems to be up to the task.
Nigerian Tennis Live reports that Strakhova, the number three seed of the tournament, will almost see this as a practice match against the world’s 398 junior player, but the Nigerian isn’t losing the match before getting into court.
The young Nigerian tennis sensation will be hope to be in her best form to stand any chance against the top seed. |
Oyinlomo defeated her Nigerian compatriot Osariemen Airhumwunde in two straight sets to qualify for the second round of the competition on Monday; thereby becoming the only ‘home player’ to make it to the second round of the singles event.
And she stands a chance to make it two wins in a row when she takes on the world’s number 288 player when hostilities resume on Wednesday afternoon, even though this might seem like a tall dream.
According to the youngster: “I always tell myself that I can win every match that I get to play. Losing a match before hitting the court is something I used to suffer from, but that attitude has changed now.
“I always have this self belief that even though I will lose a match, I will not walk out of the court without fighting, and that’s what I always do.”
Nigerian Tennis Live will keep monitoring the performance of the remaining Nigerian players in the competition and report to our teeming audience as things unfold.
