France-based Calvin Hemery has just won gold for Team Delta in the Men’s Singles event at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Edo State.
Hemery defeated Team Imo’s Uche Oparaoji 6-1, 6-2 to win gold for increase the medal haul for the leading Team Delta.
Nigeria Tennis Live gathered that the French-born Edo indigene was never in doubt of winning the tournament as he kept up with his pre-tournament billing as the favourite to clinch gold.
The 490 ranked player on the ATP did not drop a set on his way to achieving this enviable feat at the National Sports Festival in Edo State.
Feelers are that he is likely to pocket an astonishing N1m for his gold medal win at the competition, as unconfirmed reports say this is what the State Sports Commission is giving to any athlete who clinches gold at the competition.
Chances are that Hemery, a 2019 Lagos Open winner in Nigeria, will be playing the National Tournament coming up at the end of April in Abuja, as tournaments are hard to come by these days following Covis-19 cases globally.
Findings by our correspondent show that the last time the 26-year-old played an ITF tournament was in January, 2021, in Monastir, Tunisia, so he may be seeking competitive fitness ahead of the next competition he will be participating in.
