Junior ITF Circuit: Nigerian Youngster Reportedly Stranded In Togo

Nigeria’s Abayomi Phillips is reportedly stranded in Lome, Togo, after playing the final of the Junior ITF Circuit in the west African country.

Nigeria Tennis Live gathered that Phillips, who lost the boys singles final to Charles Kodjo in two straight sets of 4-6, 4-6, had to start sourcing for funds to be able to sustain himself in Togo.

According to information reaching our correspondent, the player may be unable to register for the second leg of the Lome, Togo competition as he needs to register for the competition.

The 17-year-old youngster was arguably Nigeria’s best player during the Junior ITF Circuit in Ghana, where he won the boys singles, before proceeding to Togo to cause unprecedented upsets.

South Africa-based tennis player, Dennis Osakwe, who drew our correspondent’s attention to the youngster’s plight said: “One of Nigeria player is stranded in togo, abayomi philip and he won ITF in Ghana and also Togo finalist, and he is doing well helping flag in Nigeria flag winning tournaments and he is stranded.

“This is horrible and a shame to Nigeria tennis.

“I had to send him something because he’s like a younger brother. He doesn’t have money for registration, very terrible.”

As at the time of filing this report, Nigeria Tennis Live could not ascertain the whereabouts of the player whom it was gathered, is left with no penny after the competition.
