J30 Abuja: Mohammed Upsets Bassey As Nzewi Loses To Fu Wang

The Girls’ Singles match between the J30 Abuja event’s number two seed, Etoro Bassey, and Khadijat Mohammed ended in a defeat for the former, Nigeria Tennis Live reports.

Mohammed who lost to eventual winner Ohunene Yakubu, in the quarterfinal of the first leg, proved to be more clinical against Bassey, a losing finalist at the first leg of the J30 Abuja tournament.

The match which was played on the centre court inside the tennis section of the National Stadium, Abuja, attracted a number of spectators and ended 6-3, 6-1 in favour of the home girl.

Blessing Otu, the number three seed, wasted no time in seeing off Faith Adeusi in their R16 match, winning 6-1, 6-2 just as Toluwalashe Agunbiade defeated Fareehah Adams in a 6-1, 6-1 game. Fego Ayetuoma was too strong for Bisola Ogunkolade, as she beat the Ikorodu, Lagos-based player 6-2, 6-2.

In the Boys’ Singles pairings, Jade Nzewi had no answer to all the questions posed by his opponent Fu Wang Choi, as the France-based Nigerian teenager lost 6-1, 6-1.

Ayomiposi Agboola, spurred by the support of the fans who were inside the tennis courts to watch, crushed Joel Hiveluah fro Namibia in a 6-1, 6-1 while Alex Hang Hui from Hong Kong was quote ruthless against Damilola Agunbiade in the final round of matches. He won 6-0, 6-0.

In matches scheduled for Thursday, 22 February, number one seed, Daniel Adeleye, will be playing Alex Lap Huang Hui; Joseph Franklin Jimoh will play Fu Wang Choi; Mubarak Ganiyu has a date with Kwange Elisha; Tobi Agboola will play against Lucky Danjuma.

In other matches, Ikenna Okonkwo takes on Ayomiposi Agboola, while Ayomide Oduwaye will have his day against Karim Mansurov, the competition’s number 7 seed just as Seun Ogunsakin will play against Abdullahi Mohammed.

Yahaya Sani Inabo, the number six seed, will also be on guard against Umar Abu in one of Boys’ Singles Round of 16 matches on Thursday.

Osaherun Osayimwen, the competition’s number four seed, will have a tough encounter with Success Ogunjobi while Oluwanifemi Makanjuola will ambush Abimbola Ayinla for a spot in the Girls’ Singles last eight.

Semifinalist at the first leg of the J30 Abuja event, Destiny Okhinaye, will also have to contend with Enitan Ayinla, if she must stand a chance of reaching the semis for the second consecutive week.
