J30 Abuja: Fu Wang Choi Upsets Nigeria’s Jimoh, Set For Revenge Against Yahaya

Fu Wang Choi from Hong Kong has caused an unprecedented upset at the J30 Abuja event after defeating tournament’s number two seed, Joseph Franklin Jimoh in a final set match.

The teenager who is the number one junior player from Hong Kong was at his very best against the Nigerian player, winning the first set after a serious battle.

After losing the first set 5-7, Jimoh, popularly called Biscuits, took the second set 6-3, and was hoping to consolidate in the final set, but was battling a niggling shoulder injury and lost the set 4-6.

Fu Wang now has the opportunity to get his revenge against Yahaya Sani Inabo in the quarterfinal match after losing to the Nigerian in the first leg.

The Nigerian player, seeded six for the competition, will have to be at his aggressive best when the pair take to the court on Friday, 23 February, 2024.

Daniel Adeleye, the tournament’s number one seed, will also play a repeat of the First Leg final against Seun Ogunsakin when they both play in the quarterfinals tomorrow. They defeated Alex Lap Hui and Abdullahi Mohammed 6-2, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-3 respectively.

In other matches, Ganiyu Mubarak saw off Kwange Elisha 6-1, 6-1 and will play against Lucky Danjuma who got the better of Tobi Agboola in a final set match which ended 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

Ogun-State youngster Ayomide Oduwaye could not progress past the second round for the second consecutive week after losing to Russia’s Karim Mansurov, the competition’s number seven seed who will now play against Ikenna Okonkwo, winner of the tie against Ayomiposi Agboola. 6-3, 6-0 it ended.

The Girls’ Singles quarterfinal matches are also looking good as Destiny Okhinaye who beat Enitan Ayinla will now face Ohunene Yakubu, the tournament’s number one seed while Blessing Otu who has been outstanding all week, will take on Toluwalashe Agunbiade.

Abimbola Ayinla won comfortably against Oluwanifemi Makanjuola with a 6-0, 6-1 win and will now play against Success Ogunjobi who was also ruthless in her 6-2, 6-2 win over Osaherun Osayimwen.

In the other fixture for Friday, Abuja-based Khadijat Mohammed will take on Fego Ayetuoma from Port-Harcourt.
