Even though he lost his first round match against unseeded Tom Jomby of France at the ongoing GSL Open, Nigeria’s Sylvester Emmanuel put up a show against the stubborn player, dragging him to the final set.
The Spain-based Nigerian star had lost the first set 6-3, to the determined French player but did not give up in the following set as he rallied to secure an impressive 6-4 victory inside the court one of the Tennis Section in the National Stadium.
Sylvester’s best was actually not good enough… |
But the former national champion could not hold his own against Jomby as he lost the final set 4-6, and subsequently crashed out of the tournament without an ATP point.
Like most of the Nigerian players who played in the Doubles event, Sylvester was also not lucky, as he was dumped out in the first round. Only Emmanuel Audu and Michael Michael made it to the quarter finals of the team competition after getting rid of Ireland-based Adebola Obasoto and Christian Paul.
These results leave Nigeria’s hopes of celebrating one of her stars in the second round on the shoulders of the other players in the main draw; Abdulmumuni Babalola, Joseph Imeh and Christian Paul who will be playing their matches on Tuesday.
Nigerian Tennis Live will keep tabs with the outcome of the players’ performances and report to our followers subsequently.
