In what can be described as arguably the longest match ever at the Governor’s Cup Tennis Championship, Brazilian top seed, Nicholas Santos (6), has been bundled out by an unseeded player, Tom Jomby from France.
The match which lasted exactly 3hrs 05mins was won by the French player who pushed Santos, a former world number two junior player in 2006, to the limits in a pulsating encounter that ended 7-6 (3), (6)6-7, 6-4.
In a similar vein, the match between Tunisia’s Moez Echargui (5) and Jayesh Pungliya which lasted one hour less than Santos’s loss, ended in an unfortunate end for the top seed as he retired in the final set having won the first and lost the second.
Tom Jomby sent the top seed packing from the Governor’s Cup in match that lasted over three hours. |
Pungliya was quite brave in the match after losing the first set in a tie breaker (3)6-7, he picked himself up to rout his opponent 6-3 before racing to a 5-2 lead during which period Echargui could no longer continue with the game.
Meanwhile, no Nigerian player has been able to manage a win on the day one of the second leg as they all capitulated in their various matches.
Angel McCleod, Michael Osewa, Christoper Itodo and Emmanuel Idoko were all sent packing from the Main Draws of the tournament which is its 17th consecutive year.
As at the time of filing this report, Abdulmumin Babalola and Clifford Enosoregbe were preparing for their Doubles match against their Netherlands and Serbian counterparts.
