Governor’s Cup: Angel McCleod Makes Her Debut As Nigerian Players Face Tough Tests

Young Nigerian tennis sensation, Angel McCleod who has been off competitive tennis action for about 11 weeks due to a niggling injury, will be making her return to the court when she makes her debut at the Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, Nigerian Tennis Live can report.

McCleod who had been tipped to be one of Nigeria’s shining lights in the sport was slowed down after the death of her mother and the subsequent injury she suffered in the course of the game, but all of that seem to have been left behind her now as she is fit to play top tennis championships.

With her Wild Card entry, the half-caste will take on number five seed, Tadeja Majeric in a match which is unarguably a tough test for her return from injury, and also prove how ready or not she is to compete again.

Angel McCleod gets her baptism of fire in the second leg of the Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship on Monday, 16 October, 2017.

In other matches, Christopher Itodo, another Wild Card entrant, will try to get past Hugo Largo while Nifemi Akinbiyi, the Canadian of Nigerian descent, will try her best against Ana Sofia Sanchez, the tournament’s number eight seed.

Emmanuel Idoko who qualified for the Main Draws courtesy of a play off against fellow Nigerian, will have his work cut out when he takes on Joel Meda, while Michael Osewa will fancy his chances against Chandril Sood.

In the Doubles matches involving Nigerians, Abdulmumin Babalola and Clifford Enosoregbe are expected to get better than their first leg performance when they take on the pair of Stephan Fransen and Pedja Krstin, just as Sarah Adegoke will partner Sylvia Chidera Oreigbemileke Okafor to tackle Ester Masuri and Natasa Trailovic.

Nigerian Tennis Live promises to bring you the results from the matches on day one of the first round Futures 5, as other Nigerians will wait for the second day before knowing their fate against their opponents.
