    Ex-National Player Christie Agugbom Gives Back, Organizes Junior Tennis Tournament

    Former Nigerian number one female tennis player, Christie Agugbom, has put together a South East Junior Tennis Classics for players in the south eastern part of the country.

    Nigeria Tennis Live gathered that the former tennis champion gathered U-12, 14 & 16 players from across every region in the southeast to participate in the championship.

    The event is being held in conjunction with the Imo State Tennis Association and has about 30 players from the region in attendance.

    In a brief chat with Nigeria Tennis Live, the tennis superstar noted that she decided to sponsor the competition because tennis made her who she is today.

    She revealed that she looks forward to sponsoring bigger events like Masters in the nearest future, such is her passion and dedication to reviving tennis in Nigeria.

    “I decided to sponsor the tournament because tennis made me what I am today. I look forward to sponsoring more tennis tournaments even thinking of sponsoring masters in the near future who knows,” Agugbom told our correspondent.

    When asked if she has any support from any organization or association for the event, she explained that it was self-sponsored.

    According to her: “No no, nobody supported me in sponsoring this junior tennis classic, I single handedly sponsored everything. It is not that I am rich but for the love of and passion for the tennis.

    “We have about 30 kids from South East, and we gave accommodation and feeding to the players and the coaches as well as transportation for them to and from their respective destinations.”

    The competition which started on Thursday, 22 August, will reach its climax on Saturday, 24 August, 2024 with the final matches and presentation of gift items to the winners.

    Nigeria Tennis Live will keep our readers posted on the winners of the three-day event which is being held inside the Standard Tennis Development Club, Dan Anyiam Sports Complex, Owerri, Imo State.
