Aina Goodnews emerged winner of the girls 16 final at the ongoing NNPC-Chevron Masters but she made it difficult for herself.
The Ekiti player who was a losing finalist at the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, a few months ago, was leading the match 7-3 against Sarah Adesa from Ondo and just needed two games to win.
But she chose the tough route by allowing her opponent back into the game to tie the game at 7-7. It was not until then that Goodnews took a serious approach and finished off the game.
Thus, she set the tone for more interesting final matches at the competition holding inside the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.
Chukwubuikem Amasiani will face off against Adeiza Yakubu in the boys 12 final while top Nigerian U-10 tennis starlet, Mofifunoluwa Atilola will have Salvation Alex on the opposite side of the court for the girls 12 final.
The girls 14 finals, tagged the match of the competition, will see two amazingly gifted players square up against each other for the coveted trophy.
Ekiti State’s Gloria Samuel will seek to get the better of Geuf Tennis Academy wonderkid, Favour James in a match that is expected to bring the curtains down on the week-long competition.
As at the time of putting this together, the finalists of the boys 14 and 16 had yet to be decided as their semis and round robin matches respectively were still pending.
The NNPC-Chevron Masters featuring the best U-12, 14 & 16 boys and girls across Nigeria which kicked off on Tuesday, 5 December, 2023 will end on Saturday, 9 December, 2023.
