Nigerian Tennis Live can exclusively report that the annual Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Tennis Open has been postponed.
The movement of the tournament from Lagos to Abuja as the host city for the 2018 edition had sparked unprecedented reactions from players, coaches and some tennis stakeholders in the country, with majority expressing frustrations at the decision.
The tension soon calmed down and everybody (apparently) started looking forward to the hosting of the championship in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital.
Abdulmumuni Babalola is the defending champion of the CBN Open. |
But recent developments have it that the tournament has been postponed from its former date with the new date yet to be agreed on.
According to Engr. Dayo Akindoju, the president of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) who spoke with Nigerian Tennis Live on Saturday, 21 April, the tournament will not hold in May as initially planned.
He said: “The new date for the tournament has not been decided, but it will no longer hold on the date initially decided.
“The organisers have informed that there will be a change of date but they are yet to reveal the date when it will now hold, maybe early June or thereabouts. Their reason is that some of their principals may be unavailable for the initial date and they are required to be on ground.
“We shall communicate the new date to you all when it has been decided.”
