Akpan, Adesuwa, Abua Target Semis Spot At Kikuxi Tennis Open In Angola

The Nigerian trio of Adesuwa Osabuohien, Canice Abua and Michael Emmanuel have qualified for the quarterfinals of the ongoing Kikuxi Tennis Open in Luanda, Angola.

Nigeria Tennis Live reports that the Nigerian players were invited to the tournament by the Angola Tennis Federation alongside players from about 11 other countries.

Our correspondent gathered that the $2k prize money tournament is attended by about 50 players from the countries invited including Ghana, Kenya, Congo DR, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Portugal and Paraguay.

Nigeria’s only female representative, Osabuohien will be taking on Catherine Ndeko from Congo DR in her quarterfinal match as she eyes the big prize.

The Billie Jean King Cup team captain has been in a fine form all week and will look to continue her streak when she takes to the court tomorrow.

Abua, participating in a tournament of this magnitude for the first time, will also look at reaching the semifinal stage of the championship by defeating Hernando Isnardi from Paraguay in the quarterfinal of the event.

Meanwhile, red hot Akpan, who was arguably Nigeria’s star player at the recent Davis Cup Africa Group III, will battle Diogo Alves from Portugal for a spot in the semis of the competition.

Nigeria Tennis Live gathered that the winner of the all-expense paid week-long tournament will pocket $2,000 while the runner up will take home $1,000. The third and fourth place winners will get each get $250 for their efforts. The prize money applies to both the male and female players.
