AJC Togo: Yakubu, Ogunshakin In Battle Royale For Girls, Boys Gold
After ensuring Nigeria already has gold and silver medals in the girls 14 event at the ongoing African Junior Tennis Championship in Togo, Team Nigeria will be gunning for more success.
Nigeria successfully made it to the finals of the boys and girls 16 events with Seun Ogunshakin and Nene Yakubu leading the pivot with outstanding performances on Monday afternoon.
Ogunshakin, the tournament’s number one seed, saw off Nigerian compatriot, Ganiyu Mubarak, in a fierce 7-6, 6-4 game while Yakubu had to fight to the end before making it to the final.
She played a four-hour long final set match against a very resilient Tracy Ampah, the tournament’s number two seed, before triumphing with a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 win.
To cop the gold medal this morning, Ogunshakin will have to go one better than Xavier Gakpo from Togo just as Yakubu will have to overcome Anne-Marie Gnarou, also from Togo.
Nigerians will be cheering the youngsters in these all-important encounters which add to the medals haul of the team after the U-14 girls made sure two Nigerians hit the final of the event.
