Ireland-based Nigerian tennis youngster, Adebola Obasoto is making Nigeria proud at the Junior ITF Circuit presently ongoing in Finland as he has advanced to the second round of the ranking events.

The 17-year-old player who was recently in Benin Republic and Togo for the Junior ITF Circuit, defeated a Wild Card entrant, Aleksi Lofman from Finland in two straight sets of 6-4, 7-5 in an enthralling match at the Sport Institute of Finland where the match took place.

Born to Nigerian parents, Obasoto is already eyeing Futures tournaments in Nigeria from 2018 when he would have come of age to participate in such ITF pro-circuits.

In his next match on Thursday, Obasoto will face a litmus test when he faces Robin Erik Parts, the tournament’s number two seed from Estonia.

If he wins the match against the top seed, Obasoto will qualify for the quarter final of the tournament and boost his chances of raking in more ranking points to participate in more tournaments.

Speaking on his son’s win, the father noted that he was particularly excited but not surprised because he knows what qualities his son possesses, adding that: “The challenge is that we don’t get as much sponsors as we need to get him into tournaments even though he has ranking points to participate.

“We are appealing to corporate bodies to come to our aide. Adebola is actually a good player, but he needs more tournaments where he can showcase his skills.”

Nigerian Tennis Live will keep monitoring the situation and publish a detailed report as events unfold.
