Massive Leap For Nigerian Players In New World Rankings

Nigerian junior players who played six weeks of junior ITF competitions in Accra, Ghana, will be counting their luck with the new rankings released on Monday, 21 October, 2024.

Daniel Adeleye and Prosperity Okonkwo accounted for five of the six boys’ Singles titles across six legs of both J30 and J60 tournaments in Ghana, and their rankings are reflecting their progress.

Adeleye who regained his spot as Nigeria’s number one junior player on the ITF ratings, retained his position and moved even one spot in the latest rankings. He is now ranked 263.

On the other hand, Okonkwo, who dazzled the spectators in Ghana, kept rising as he kept winning competitions, and is rightly putting the pressure on Seun Ogunsakin (ranked 283) as he moved 55 places to now sit as the world’s 320 ranked junior player.

Also, as a result of their consistency during the outing in Ghana, the other Nigerian players in top ten of the junior rankings kept their composure and moved further on the log.

Franklin Jimoh, one of the more consistent players in Ghana, moved 14 spots upwards to rank 589 while Ibadan-born Mubarak Ganiyu is now ranked 756 after moving 15 places. Lucky Danjuma, who showed true class in Ghana, is now ranked 864 in the world to complete the list of Nigerian players in the top 1000.

Others are Yahaya Sani Inabo (moved 120 spots) who is ranked 1203, Oluwatobi Agboola (moved 237 spots) ranked 1731 while the last player in the top ten ranking, Ayomiposi Agboola, is ranked 1865.

For the girls, Khadijat Mohammed, ranked 944 remains firmly in second place as she is being hunted by Etoro Bassey who is the 977th junior tennis player in the world.

Success Ogunjobi who enjoyed brilliant spells in Ghana, made a massive leap of 205 spots to now rank 1194 in the world just as Bright Emmanuel reaped the fruit of her interesting outing in Ghana, to now rank 1795 after moving five places in the latest rankings.

Nigerians will be looking forward to more tennis youngsters playing in more tournaments before the year ends so that the players can further boost their ranking.
