No fewer than 150 players are already in Lagos for the Tennis Players Parents Association, TPPA National Junior Tennis Championship.
The players, who arrived from 12 different centres across the country, earned the rights to be in Lagos after participating in two legs of regional held earlier this year.

The youngsters who qualified from their various centres are now in Lagos for the grand finale which is also the biggest junior tennis tournament on clay court in Nigeria.

The opening round of matches scheduled for Monday, 4 August, could not commence as planned owing to the incessant rainfall at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, venue of the keenly contested competition.

Some of the players who are already in Lagos for the showdown, told Nigeria Tennis Live that the UTR-rated competition has helped boost their UTR points and increased their chances of playing College tennis when they are ready.

Heman Afaramai whose UTR was about 7 at the last finals in Lagos, was excited to reveal his new UTR 9 rating, which he attributed to the consistency of the TPPA-organized UTR championship across Nigeria.
“My ratings came up very well because of all the tournaments we have been playing since last year, and I hope to do better this year so that I can further improve on my UTR points,” he told Nigeria Tennis Live.

Another youngster Nigerians should be looking out for is Lorelay Holzendorff, a National Youth Games gold medalist, and one of Nigeria’s most talented youngsters at the competition.
The Edo State young athlete who missed the last Finals in Lagos, told our correspondent that “I am really looking forward to this year’s competition after missing out last year because I was writing exams.

“I hope to win this year because the competition will be a bit tougher due to the level of players that are participating and their quality too”.
Mr. Segun Aluko, the TPPA President, assures all participants, parents and coaches that the Nationals will leave them with an experience they will always cherish.
