Nigerian players participating at the ongoing J30 Abuja event survived major worries in their respective matches on Wednesday, 11 June, 2025.
Of the three male players who were in action on Day three of the World Junior Tennis Tour event in Nigeria’s federal capital, two had to battle through the final sets to reach the next phase of the competition.
First leg winner and the second seed in the second, Lucky Danjuma, was made to fight for his points as he lost the first set 4-6 to unseeded Indian player, Dhananjay Tibrewal, and had to fight back to take the second set 7-5.

In the final set, Danjuma who is looking at increasing his Junior ITF titles to four in 2025 alone, was more emphatic with his finishes, and ended up winning 6-1 to huge sigh of relief by his friends and supporters who watched on from the sidelines.

In similar fashion, Ezekiel Azi, another seeded Nigerian player, had to battle from a set down against a rampaging Rodrigore Villa Campo from Spain.
The Spaniard had taken a solid 7-5 lead in the first set before the Abuja-based tennis youngster fought bac with a 6-4 win in the second. But unlike Danjuma, the final set was another tug of war for Azi before securing a 7-5 win.

Meanwhile, Franklin Jimoh, the tournament’s number one seed, won his match against an unseeded player in two sets, however, the result did not look convincing.
Mevi Irimiya, a Nigerian player, gave him a scare by battling really hard before losing 4-6, 5-7 to the top Nigerian junior player.

In the female event, Ohunene Yakubu defeated Goodnews Aina in two straight sets of 6-1, 6-3 to book a spot in the semifinal while Success Ogunjobi, the number two seed and winner of the first leg, defeated Blessing Otu, 6-1, 2-0 (rtd).
Both players await the results from other matches to now who they will be coming up against in the semis of the J30 Abuja second leg.
