Sharon Danjuma, the younger sibling of Lucky Danjuma, was one of the outstanding players in the opening round at the second leg of the J30 Abuja event.

Danjuma, fondly called Jiggy Jiggy, fought tooth and nail to secure his first ever win at an ITF event when he played a final set against Manan Dhir Sheetal Taneja Dhir from India.

The Nigerian teenager had lost the first set 3-6 before bagelling his opponent 6-0 in the second set en route to a 6-2 win in the final set to reach the second round of an ITF event for the first time ever.

The youngster will now face fellow Nigerian, Oluwatobi Agboola, in the second round to advance to the next phase of the keenly contested J30 Abuja competition.

Another player who fought his way into the second round of the tournament was David Edwards, the pristinely talented single fist backhand player. He defeated Aminu Ibrahim, another talented player, in what was a battle of the backhands.

Edwards took the first set 6-4 against his opponent before succumbing to a 3-6 loss in the second set. He, however, played some beautiful tennis in the final et on his way to securing a 6-2 win and second round berth.

The Nigerian will face Manan Rai in the second round and will hope to advance to the quarterfinal stage of the competition for a second consecutive week.

Khadijat Mohammed, Nigeria’s number one female tennis player, will take on Egypt’s Habiba Habib, finalist from the first leg, while Etoro Bassey will confront Luise Luczak from Germany, in another mouthwatering clash on Wednesday.
